Priceless Real Estate Investing Lesson From Disney-Pixar’s New Movie “UP!”

Charlene and I are HUGE Pixar fans. It seems like just about every movie they put out is fantastic! I think Toy Story II is my own personal favorite.

Anyhow, we were both pretty excited to see their latest release UP!

But little did I know, besides being a great movie, it had a PRICELESS Real Estate Investing lesson too!

And it’s one you NEED to hear (especially on a Monday morning).

But before that – just a little bit about Pixar’s UP!

The story follows a curmudgeonly old man, Carl Fredricksen.

Fredricksen is a “super” senior essentially left with only memories behind him and nothing ahead of him.

Through a strange turn of events (as Disney is always great at) this cranky old prune finds himself finally taking the adventure he had always dreamed about.

(Don’t worry – NO SPOILERS here

You see, as a little boy, Fredricksen had a dream to take an amazing journey to Paradise Falls. But his whole life there always seemed to be reasons, or better yet, excuses, why he couldn’t go.

So sadly he never takes the adventure until he is an old man with his best years behind him. But at least he takes the trip.

Now before I potentially spoil the story (and I highly recommend it – great for the kids too!) let’s get back to real estate investing.

FACT: When it comes to the greatest accomplishments and adventures in our lives, there is NO SUCH THING as perfect timing!

If you’re married you know this. There’s no perfect time to get married…

And buying your first home – there’s so many reasons not to do it and to put it off, but when you want it so bad, you just go for it.

Oh and kids – do you know ANYBODY who has ever said “Now is the perfect time to have kids!”

Of course not! There’s always a million distractions and obstacles and excuses why it’d be easier to do it some other time. But we have them any way.

And when you ask any parent, while the timing is NEVER perfect, the result is always PRICELESS!

Even most parents in the toughest situations would never go back and erase it all.

Oh, ok, back to real estate investing business.

It really is the same thing.

Think about – what is that NEXT BIG STEP you want to take?

Maybe it’s going from a part-time investor to a full-time investor?

Maybe it’s finally leaving your job to give 100% attention to making real estate profits?

Or maybe it’s even just doing your first deal??

Whatever the case, please believe me, there is no perfect timing.

The easy thing to do is to be like Carl Fredricksen in UP! and wait around to you really have nothing to live for before you pursue your dreams.

Is this really what you want?

The obstacles will always be there.

The excuses will always be there.

The naysayers will always be there.

I promise you – they will!

So the only thing that really matters is this – “How badly do you want it?”

Let me share something with you a little personal –

One of my best friend’s Todd just had his family dog, Domino, pass away.
It’s been really hard on him and his two girls, my nieces.

(I know if you never had a family dog this probably sounds a little dramatic.  But if you’ve even had a family pet, you know they are much more than just a dog, they become part of the heartbeat of your home and when they go, it’s really sad
and painful).

Anyhow, I remember once Todd and I were talking with another buddy of ours Elliot. Elliot never had a dog. And Elliot said he never would.

His reason was, “It’s just so painful when they pass away, I’d rather never have one and never feel the pain.”

Having lost a couple dogs growing up, I thought what Elliot said was deep at the time. I mean, I wish I had never felt that loss (the same loss that Todd and his girls are feeling right now).

But then it hit me – that’s just CR-A-ZY!

I mean sure, you never feel the loss. But you also never feel the joy of having a family dog. You never get to have all the fun and make all the memories. You never get to take care of that dog.

And so ever while I hate to ever think about the days like this I’ll have to face, that doesn’t mean I’m not going to have my dog and enjoy it.

Before I start getting really mushy here – listen to the million dollar point.

I would bet all my protein bars (I don’t gamble money) that the biggest obstacle stopping you from taking that next BIG STEP in your investing business… from pursuing your DREAMS… is this-

You’re AFRAID.

You’re afraid of what will happen if things don’t go right.

You’re afraid of the pain and disappointment of failure.

You’re afraid of what people will say and think about you.

Well – will you let me help you?

Listen closely…

When it comes to the big and wonderful dreams in your life-

YOU ARE GOING TO FAIL!

I promise you, you are going to fail many times along the way.

But THIS DOES NOT MAKE YOU A FAILURE!

You’re only failure when you give up…

When you fail to take action…

When you accept defeat before ever giving your all!

This is not just a PUMP SPEECH.

This is an important psychological shift.

You see, once you realize that you are going to FAIL in the process of pursuing your dreams you’ll be able to have the right mindset.

When you have setbacks and failures, you won’t give up. And you won’t question your dreams because you knew it was all going to be part of the process.

So don’t be like Carl Fredricksen… don’t wait until you have nothing left to live for and nobody to enjoy your life with to pursue the great adventures of your life.
