I Fight For Milk – Part 1 of 2

Inside this article I’m going to share with you about my “return”, fighting for milk, my first two baby words and what it all has to do with YOU making money in real estate in 2010.

(Seriously this one changed my entire attitude on making money this new year)

Welcome to another edition of Makin Deals Monday =)

And a belated Happy New Year to all of you.

As you may have caught wind, the last few weeks I’ve been out on paternity leave. Charlene and I are now the proud parents of little Sarai Isabella!

(Everyone says she looks just like me and yet somehow they also think she’s SO cute. Never thought I’d make an attractive woman. Go figure :o P )

So here it is. Another year. Another set of blank pages to either be brightly filled with your grandest adventures and successes yet…

or to become one of your dark chapters filled with nothing but excuses, blame and regret.

Last week, Charlene and I sat down to watch a moviethat pretty much was like a HUGE SLAP IN THE FACE and wake up call.

(I’d been kinda of worried about getting back to workand facing a new year filled with potential new challenges and other things that I often let stress me out about the
real estate world).

The flick we watched was “Cinderella Man” starring Russell Crowe.

It’s the real life story of James Braddock, a professional boxer whose family and life was devastated by the Great Depression.

(FYI – Great movie. I definitely recommend it. But there are a handful of words that aren’t appropriate for the little ones so save this for an adult night. Besides kids usually don’t find the Great Depression entertaining, unless it is put to music – which this is NOT a musical)

Before I get to the two lines in this movie that just ROCKED ME and gave me the kick in the butt I needed to crush 2010 here’s a little synopsis (don’t worry – no spoilers)

James Braddock is a light heavy weight contender who is on the rise with the claim to fame of having NEVER been knocked out in an amateur or professional fight.

Braddock is a family man with kids in a beautiful wife living the American Dream when the Great Depression hits.

And it hits hard.

Braddock finds himself living in what can only be described as a dark and dirty one-room slum (like so many families did).

Braddock once made close to $1000 boxing in one night, now he can’t even scrape together $10 to keep the heat on so his children don’t get sick.

Braddock wakes up every morning when a herd of fathers and husbands just like him stand pressed against the dock gaits. Hoping and praying they will be the lucky ones
picked for work today.

Dozens and dozens of men. And only 4 to 5 get to work that day. The rest go home to their hungry families empty handed. And even the ones who do work, only buy themselves one more day before they have to find food to put back on the table.

(When you see this, you’ll understand why they called it a “depression” and as crazy as things are right now how blessed we really are).

Through an unusual turn of events (all a true story) Braddock gets one last chance to step into the ring and become a championship boxer again.

The guy he has to face is a killer – literally he killed two men in the ring already.

(This is where the first real estate investing nugget comes in)

The big-time boxing promoter tries to warn Braddock to turn down the fight and not step into the ring with this guy. “Do you really want to get killed??”

Braddock (Crowe) stares at him with fire in his eyes…

“What? You don’t think people get killed out there everyday on the loading docks or starving down in slums. At least in the ring I know who I’m fighting.”

DING DING DING DING DING!!!

> > STOP and read that again…

The first one-two punch.

Did you catch it??

There are a lot of folks out there who try to sell you the Manhattan Bridge with promises that making money in real estate is the easiest thing in the world and you will never have any challenges or let downs.

That’s not me.

I’ve never been the guy to set up false expectations and never will be.

Making money in real estate is the most time tested and proven wealth building strategy. But yes, it can and will be hard at times.

But this is where what Braddock says comes in – you see alot of us have bought into the idea that
working hard and having a job is some super safe perfect world.

Um I think we’ve all been woken up to the truth.

It’s not.

Just like you can face challenges and experience failure in real estate…

The same exact thing can happen with jobs.

People get fired. Laid off.

Companies get bought out. Or go bankrupt.

WORST OF ALL – most of the time the outcome is out of your control. You are at the mercy of
someone else.

Just like when Braddock would go to the docks every morning with all the other guys praying someone would pick him to work that day.

Real estate investing is about making money, sure.

But it’s about so much more.

It’s about taking control of your life.

It’s about owning your future.

It’s about knowing that at the end of the day win, lose or drawer – YOU are in control.

You “know who you are FIGHTING”.

And face it – when you “win” at a job at best you get to keep working your job with a 5% raise.

When you win at real estate you can quickly double or even triple your income in your first year!

I don’t know what challenges you are facing this
New Year.

Maybe you are afraid to do your first deal…

Maybe you made some good money doing real estate last year but then you hit a slump…

Maybe you keep trying to get started in real estate but just can’t find the time to make it happen…

Whatever the challenge -

What do you say we do this thing together this year =)

In 2010, I’m rededicating myself to helping you in every way possible achieve your goals and the success you want.

(It’s why I do what I do – creating content and writing articles like these for you. I care about you. I believe in YOU!)

I have more to share – LOTS – but this message is getting longer than I planned.

So tune in tomorrow for part II where I talk about “Fighting For Milk” and my first two baby words!

Best,
